Abstract

This quiet happy life ended abruptly in the spring of 1677, when Johann Friedrich, the Duke of Hannover, asked for Stensen as successor to the late Vicar Apostolic Valerio Maccioni (Chap. XI). The decision was made by Stensen’s superiors and in May 1677 he left his beloved Florence to spend the summer in Rome. On September 13 he was appointed bishop of Titiopolis and on September 19 he was consecrated bishop.
