Introduction

In Section 6.4, one considered the simultaneous estimation of the state and unknown input vectors of a class of nonlinear systems using full-order observers. This chapter continues to look at simultaneous estimation of both state and unknown input vectors. In the next Section, one first looks at the problem of estimating simultaneously a linear function of the state and unknown input vectors of linear systems with unknown inputs by using reduced-order observers. The problem is conveniently solved by using a descriptor system approach. In the later Sections of the chapter, the focus will be on the design of reduced-order observers and linear functional observers to estimate simultaneously the state and unknown input vectors of uncertain time-delay systems.
