Abstract
This paper is a reconsideration of the approach to ontology used in some projects over the last several years. The view expressed here is that ontology has been a sometimes useful, but often-troublesome component in applied AI systems. This is especially true as the domain of the system is beyond a tight single domain. The conclusion is that a different approach can be used to extend the usefulness of ontologies in broad domain systems.
