Abstract
This paper considers challenges related to promoting new technologies for manufacturing clean energy vehicles (CEVs) such as electric vehicles for a sustainable green society. In order to promote the use of CEVs, manufacturing technology that overcomes high costs and material constraints is essential. This paper presents the challenges in the manufacturing of CEVs by considering constraints related to global warming, energy security, material exhaustion and an ageing society. The concept discussed is based on a socio-technical approach and comes from the necessity for a proactive design for the future. Two cases are illustrated to demonstrate the proposed methods and its benefits. A risk analysis of raw materials can help auto industries make a decision about until when they should develop substitution technology for the raw materials. An analysis based on life cycle assessment provides useful information about impact of carbon taxation and technology innovation such as battery cost reduction to policy makers and the manufacturers.
