Abstract
After the unexpected discovery of nuclear fission in 1938 by Hahn and Straßmann in Berlin the basic concepts for a theoretical modeling of this reaction had been established very quickly. Many concepts were taken from other fields of physics and adapted for the specific use in nuclear fission theory. They came from as diverse disciplines as hydrodynamics, aerosol physics, statistical mechanics, atomic physics, molecular spectroscopy, and chemical reaction theory.
