Treatment for Dupuytren’s Disease: An Overview of Options

Dupuytren’s Disease and Related Hyperproliferative Disorders

Abstract

In this chapter, we present a systematic overview of the current treatment options for Dupuytren’s Disease based on high evidence level studies. Few publications on the effectiveness of these treatment options provide greater than level 4 evidence (expert opinion). Most hand surgeons practice limited fasciectomy. Dermofasciectomy is used for the treatment of recurrences due to the reported lower risk of recurrence. Percutaneous needle fasciotomy is a minimally invasive technique with good results in the short term for mild contractures, but has a high recurrence rate. Collagenase has been introduced to the American market, and short-term results are promising. Radiotherapy has been reported by some, but not all, to delay disease progression in early stages of the disease.

This chapter has previously been published in the Dutch Journal of Medicine as: van Rijssen AL, Werker PM (2009) Treatment of Dupuytren’s contracture; an overview of options [Article in Dutch] Ned Tijdschr Geneeskd. 153:A129. Translated and reproduced with permission.
