Zusammenfassung
Jedes Jahr werden weltweit mit Produkten der Industriellen Biotechnologie (die auch als „weiße“ Biotechnologie bezeichnet wird) ungefähr 70 Milliarden Euro umgesetzt. Das entspricht etwa zwei bis drei Prozent des globalen Chemiemarktes. Typische Produkte der industriellen Biotechnologie sind Biokraftstoffe, Enzyme und spezielle Chemikalien wie Antibiotika, Vitamine und Aminosäuren. Dabei handelt es sich in aller Regel um Substanzen, die natürlicherweise von Mikroorganismen produziert werden. Als Einsatzstoffe dienen in der Industriellen Biotechnologie fast ausschließlich nachwachsende Rohstoffe wie Zucker, Stärke — und Sojaprodukte oder Pflanzenöl.
