High-Pressure Vibrational Spectroscopy Studies of the Folding, Misfolding and Amyloidogenesis of Proteins

  • Chapter

Protein Folding and Misfolding

Abstract

A review is given for high-pressure Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy studies on biomolecular systems with a special focus on proteins. After reviewing the experimental techniques, we present data on the pressure-induced un- and refolding reaction of proteins as well as studies on enzyme reactions. Finally, studies on macromolecular protein mimetics and recent advances in using pressure for studying misfolding and aggregation/fibrillation of proteins are discussed.
