Zusammenfassung
Die Darstellungstheorie von Gruppen hat ihre Wurzeln in vielen verschiedenen Teilgebieten der Mathematik des 19. Jahrhunderts. Sie wurde berührt und/oder (weiter-)entwickelt zur Beantwortung von Fragen und Problemen der Lieschen Transformationsgruppen, der Invariantentheorie, der Theorie der Differentialgleichungen, der Geometrie, der Arithmetik oder der Algebra – dem Bereich, dem sie heute zugerechnet wird – aber auch in der Auseinandersetzung mit Grundlagenfragen der theoretischen Physik. In allen diesen Gebieten wurden Erkenntnisse gewonnen, welche sich für die Darstellungstheorie als fundamental herausstellten. Dies geschah nicht selten beiläufig, da das eigentliche Forschungsinteresse in eine andere Richtung ging. Daher können diese Forschungsergebnisse nicht ohne weiteres der Geschichte der Darstellungstheorie zugerechnet werden.
