Zusammenfassung
Der vorliegende Beitrag hat zum Ziel, darzustellen, welche Möglichkeiten die IT hat, einen Beitrag zur Energieeffektivität und Energieeffizienz zu leisten. Hierfür wird zunächst das Dilemma der Erschöpfung nicht erneuerbarer Energien diskutiert und ein selektiver Literaturüberblick zum Thema Green IT vorgelegt. Anschliessend werden neue Konzepte aus der Unternehmenspraxis beschrieben und ein Ausblick gegeben, was zukünftig aus IT Sicht noch getan werden könnte.

Momentan liegt der Fokus bei der Entwicklung neuer Produkte immer noch hauptsächlich auf der Funktionalität von Geräten, ohne den Energieverbrauch in den Vordergrund zu stellen. Tendenzen zu einem neuen Entwicklungsverhalten sind aber deutlich erkennbar (Wright et al. 2003).

Das Ergebnis der Studie von Bengtsson und Agerfalk (2010) ist, dass IT eine sehr wichtige Rolle für Nachhaltigkeit im Unternehmen spielen kann, vor allem weil IT-Systeme explizit Nachhaltigkeitsindikatoren festlegen, die wiederum eine Organisation zu neuen Handlungsweisen ermutigt.

In privaten Haushalten konnten bereits durch die Installation von „Smart Meter“ nachweislich bis zu 10 % an Energie eingespart werden (European Commission 2009).

Eine 100 % – Vernetzung meint ein ähnliches Szenario wie das Konzept des „Ubiquitous Computing“. Hier wird davon ausgegangen, dass in Zukunft alle Dinge und selbst Biometrie-Daten miteinander vernetzt sein und ständig miteinander abgeglichen werden (Poslad 2009).
