Abstract

This article describes the main ideas underlying the design of the new Gantry 2 (G2) system of PSI. Based on a conceptually simple but very powerful scanning technology, the new second-generation scanning system is derived from the positive experience of using the previous gantry, Gantry 1 (G1). This article will provide a general overview on the various technological options faced when realizing such a new device. The reasoning for the present system will be discussed, and alternative solutions will be described, where appropriate.
