Abstract

The purpose of this work was the study of the cefalexin release in acrylic bone cements, modified with inorganic loads as hydroxyapatites and calcium carbonate, in order to settle the release mechanism associated with the diffusion process, starting from the analysis of the different mathematical models. The release studies in vitro were carried out in phosphate buffer dissolution of pH 7.4 and temperature of 37 °C. The cefalexin concentration was determined by an UV-visible spectrophotometer at a wavelength of 260 nm. It was carried out a factorial design 23 with two central points that generated ten experimental runs; they were carried out three replicas to each of them. The accumulated quantity of released cefalexina was fixed as a function of the time. The final results show the pattern that better represents the release profile that it is the proposed by Peppas and Sahlin.
