Forensic Histopathology

Abstract

Sudden unexpected deaths occur frequently in forensic autopsy practice. In such cases, pathological findings in the heart can often explain the acuteness of death (Fineschi et al. 2006; Fineschi and Pomara 2004). In addition to ruptured myocardial infarcts, these pathological changes include rare diseases, such as a primary heart tumor (atrial myxoma, rhabdomyosarcoma) or pericardial tamponade in the case of a dissecting aortic aneurysm.
