Abstract

This review updates a previous one (Reddy and Fried, Parasitol Res 104:217–221, 2009) on Crohn’s and other autoimmune diseases and helminth therapy. Our review considers the use of various helminths or their worm products to treat the following autoimmune diseases: Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Type-1 Diabetes, and Asthma and allergic disorders. The use of the following helminths or their worm products are considered in this review: the nematodes Trichuris suis, Necator americanus, Heligomosomoides polygyrus, Trichinella spiralis, Ancanthocheilonema viteae, Ascaris suum, Nippostrongylus brasiliensis, Syphacia obvelata, Dirofilaria immitis, Litomosoides sigmodontis; the cestodes Hymenolepis diminuta and Taenia crassiceps; and the trematodes Schistosoma mansoni, Schistosoma japonicum, and Fasciola hepatica. Our review discusses the potential role of worm products rather than live worms in future studies using helminths to treat autoimmune diseases.
