Abstract

First reports of spinal vascular malformations were made in 1885 [1] and by Gaupp in an interestingly titled paper published in 1888 [2]. In 1915, Cobb (1915) described various clinical features and a relationship between skin lesions [3], and in 1928, Michon describes spinal subarachnoid haemorrhage due to an AVM and the first successful surgical excision performed by Perthes in 1921 [4]. However, these early reports are dwarfed by a detailed description of 122 (96 from the literature and 16 of his own cases) made by Wyburn-Mason in 1943 [5]. He distinguished two major types: arteriovenous angiomas (32%) and venous angiomas (68%). Later, he divided them into five groups:
