Zusammenfassung
Das deutsche Bruttoinlandsprodukt (BIP) wies im Jahr 2002 lediglich ein minimales Wachstum auf. Ohne das deutlich angestiegene Exportvolumen wäre es sogar zu einem Rückgang des BIP gekommen. Ein Großteil dieses Exportvolumens wird von Klein- und Mittelständischen Unternehmen (KMUs) generiert (Bässen, Behnam u. Gilbert 2001). Diese scheinen auch in Zeiten weltwirtschaftlicher Schwäche resistenter gegen Umsatz- bzw Gewinneinbußen zu sein als multinationale Konzerne. Dementsprechend verwundert es kaum, dass sich Mittelstandsverbände und Industrie- und Handelskammern permanent darum bemühen, den mittelständischen Unternehmen einen besseren Zugang zu internationalen Messen, Außenhandelskontakten sowie Finanzierungsquellen zu schaffen. Gerade der Kapitalzugang wird durch die bevorstehende Einführung von Basel II und der damit verbundenen Verteuerung der finanziellen Mittel für international tätige KMUs erschwert.
