Abstract
Malacoplakia literally means a soft plaque and refers to the development of chronic inflammatory lesions with a characteristic histology, usually found in the mucosa of hollow organs. The process was first described in the bladder by Michaelis and Gutmann in 1902 [17]. One Year later David von Hansemann coined the term “malacoplakia” [11]. While many organs can be involved, the most common site is the genitourinary tract [28]. When the gastrointestinal tract is affected, the most likely site is the descending colon [3, 5-5, 12-14, 22]. Even though it is a non-mucosal surface, the skin can also be affected, most often in the perianal region (Fig.6.1) [1, 19, 25, 26].
