Abstract
‘Where a species is adapted to a particular habitat, its distribution limits will tend to be circumscribed by whatever conditions restrict the occurrence of that habitat, but these conditions may vary over the total range… Probably most of our upland species show a similar breeding biology in Britain to that elsewhere, and their habitats here thus tend to be scaled down equivalents of those over their much larger European, Eurasian or global ranges’ (Ratcliffe 1990).
