Zusammenfassung
Der gesellschaftliche Stoffwechsel umfasst sämtliche Stoffströme, angefangen von der Entnahme von Rohstoffen bis zur Abgabe von Emissionen und Abfällen an die Umwelt, Wirkungs- und mengenumsatzbasierte Indikatoren beschreiben die damit verbundenen Umweltbelastungen. Eine zukunftsfähige Gestaltung des Stoffwechsels erfordert die Bestimmung notwendiger Ziele und die Verfolgung wirksamer Strategien. Zu ihrer Umsetzung werden geeignete Informationsinstrumente benötigt. Stoffstrombilanzen quantifizieren Umfang und Struktur des Stoffwechsels. Davon abgeleitete Indikatoren beschreiben seine Eigenschaften in Bezug auf Input (z.B. direkter Material-Input), Output (z.B. verarbeitete Stoffabgabe), Verbrauch (z.B. globaler Materialverbrauch), Bilanz (z.B. Nettobestandszuwachs) und Effizienz (z.B. wirtschaftliche Leistung im Verhältnis zum Input). Indikatoren zur Konsistenz befinden sich in Entwicklung.
