Zusammenfassung
Am 13.8.1908 in Wulsdorf (jetzt Bremerhaven) geboren, besuchte Herbert Kölbel das Realgymnasium in Hannover. 1928 begann er das Chemiestudium in Freiburg/Br. bei Hermann Staudinger (1881–1965), 1930 folgte er Walter Hückel (1895–1973) nach Greifswald, bei dem er 1934 promovierte. Als Assistent von Franz Fischer (1877–1947) am Kaiser-Wilhelm-Institut für Kohleforschung in Mülheim/ Ruhr lernte er die 1925 entwickelte Fischer-Tropsch-Synthese (FT) kennen, bei der mit aus Kohle gewonnenem CO und H2 und einem Kobaltkatalysator eine Reihe Kohlenwasserstoffe (KW) als „Kogasin“ synthetisiert werden, vor allem für die Benzinsynthese.
