Abstract
Two qualifiers classify parallel computers (Ragsdale 1992): the relationship of the memory to the processors and the number of instruction streams available to the system. There are two general relationships between memory and processors: distributed memory and shared memory. In distributed-memory systems, each processor has its own private memory. Shared-memory systems have a single pool of memory to which all processors have access.
