Zusammenfassung
Mitarbeiter von Rettungsdiensten und Katastrophenschutz sowie Polizisten und Feuerwehrleute sind bei Großschadensereignissen und Naturkatastrophen häufig starken psychischen Belastungen ausgesetzt. Früher wurde dieser Umstand von den betroffenen Berufsgruppen selbst als ein unvermeidbarer Aspekt der täglichen Arbeit hingenommen (»Berufsrisiko«). In der Öffentlichkeit herrschte die Meinung vor, den Mitarbeitern der Rettungs- und Notfalldienste falle es leicht mit ihrem beruflichen Stress umzugehen, da er »einfach zur Arbeit dazugehört« (▸ s.Kap.3). Die Mitarbeiter dieser Berufsgruppen werden im Allgemeinen als risikofreudig charakterisiert. Thre Persönlichkeitsstruktur ermögliche es ihnen, auf Krisensituationen angemessen zu reagieren und sie seien für ihre große Bereitschaft bekannt, anderen Menschen zu helfen. Gleichzeitig kann jedoch gerade diese Hilfsbereitschaft zu einer Verleugnung eigener Hilfsbedürftigkeit führen.
