Zusammenfassung

Osteoporose wird erst nach Auftreten von Frakturen klinisch symptomatisch, denn Knochenschwund alleine verursacht in der Regel weder Schmerzen noch Bewegungseinschränkung. Die überwiegende Zahl der osteoporosebedingten Frakturen betrifft postmenopausale Frauen und tritt nach einem Sturz auf. Mit steigendem Altersdurchschnitt der Bevölkerung wird auch die Zahl der osteoporotischen Frakturen stark zunehmen. Im Jahre 1996 belief sich die Zahl der Schenkelhalsfrakturen in Deutschland nach einer Hochrechnung auf 140 000 pro Jahr. Bis zum Jahr 2020 rechnet man mit mehr als einer Verdoppelung dieser Zahl. Alleine die Kosten der Schenkelhalsfrakturversorgung, die beim älteren Menschen immer mit einer Hospitalisierung verbunden ist, belaufen sich derzeit auf etwa 3 Milliarden EUR für Deutschland. Auch die Anzahl von Frakturen an anderen Skelettabschnitten wird weiter ansteigen.
