Zusammenfassung

So genannte Sexualhormone — vor allem Östrogene, Progesteron und Androgene — haben eine essenzielle Funktion für die reproduktive Gesundheit einschließlich der Fortpflanzungsfähigkeit. Sie sind auch für die normale Funktion zahlreicher weiterer Organsysteme von Bedeutung. Ihre Sekretion vermindert sich bei der Mehrheit gesunder Frauen stetig bereits ab dem 3. Lebensjahrzehnt. Dieser Prozess geht fakultativ mit individuell unterschiedlich ausgeprägten und empfundenen Beschwerden und Funktionseinschränkungen einher, der sich nicht nur auf die Symptome der primären Zielorgane von Sexualhormonen beschränkt. Die permanente Einstellung der an den Ovarialzyklus gebundenen ovariellen Östradiolproduktion bei zunächst erhaltener Androgensynthese bedeutet die Beendigung der natürlichen Reproduktionsfähigkeit und betrifft mittelbar auch andere Organe und Funktionen. Dieser ausnahmslose, fast vollständige funktionelle Ausfall eines seit der Kindheit endokrin aktiven Organs bei in aller Regel als gesund anzusehenden Frauen hat kein Korrelat beim männlichen Geschlecht. Sichtbarer Ausdruck dieser Umstellung ist das permanente Ausbleiben der Menstruation.
