Abstract

Erythropoietin (EPO) was first characterized as a hematopoietic growth factor and has been in clinical use as such for more than a decade. The expression of EPO and its receptor in brain tissue, cultured neurons and astrocytes along with its neuroprotective potential in several experimental models of stroke expands its biological role beyond hematopoiesis [15].
