Zusammenfassung
Infektionen mit Bakterien des Genus Bartonella sind schon seit Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts als klinische Entität bekannt. Erst in den letzten Jahren wurde ihnen jedoch eine entsprechende Beachtung als Erreger opportunistischer Infektionen bei Immunsupprimierten geschenkt. Die Entdeckung, dass B. henselae auch das wesentliche Pathogen im Rahmen der Katzenkratzkrankheit (»cat-scratch disease«, CSD) darstellt, hat zu einer Fülle neuer Erkenntnisse nicht nur hinsichtlich der Genus, der Erregerbiologie und -Ökologie, sondern auch der Infektionspa thogenese mit intrazellulären Pathogenen sowie der Persistenz von Erregern im vermeintlich sterilen Medium Blut bei Säugetieren geführt.
