Die Häufigkeit des Diabetes mellitus wird in den westlichen Industriestaaten auf 6–8% geschätzt. Alters- und populationsabhängig kann die Prävalenz wesentlich höhere Werte erreichen und beträgt bei Pima-Indianern (Arizona/USA) im Alter über 20 Jahren 34%.
