Abstract
In external-beam therapy (or teletherapy), a radiation beam coming from a source located at a distance from the patient is directed toward the patient. The source of the radiation emitted is enclosed in a heavily shielded source head. The prefix ”tele“ (meaning far or distant) in teletherapy (in contrast to the prefix brachy, meaning near or short, in brachytherapy) signifies the use of a large source-to-patient distance. In most practical cases, this distance is in the range of 30 to 150 cm.
