Reprise

This book was motivated by the relevance of process modeling in current industry practice and set out to examine the quality of process modeling by evaluating the goodness of the grammars analysts use when doing process modeling. It sought to address two questions in particular:

  • Which characteristics should a high-quality process modeling grammar possess?

  • Are users of process modeling grammars aware of the quality characteristics of a process modeling grammar, and do the quality characteristics of a grammar impact the way the grammars are put to use by process modelers?

In order to answer these two questions, three evaluation approaches were introduced, described and applied in this book. In Chapter three I have introduced and applied an ontological theory to describe characteristics of process modeling grammars in terms of their ontological properties, and derived a set of propositions how violation of ontological principles can lead to quality deficiencies of the grammars.
