Abstract

Patients suffering from inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are known to have a threefold higher risk for thrombotic events compared to standard population. Recent studies show no higher prevalence for genetic thrombophilic risk factors in this group. Compared to patients without IBD manifestation of thrombosis appears earlier in life. Changed coagulation situation during inflammation is suspected to be the major cause. However it is clear that there must be multifactorial genesis.
