Abstract
Due to new requests of the automotive industry more and more electrical power must be transmited through the wiring harness. The power consumption of new automotive applications rises up rapidly. Solutions for these new board net architectures are the 42 V technology and new fusing concepts. At the present conventional protection systems are mainly specified on the consumer characteristics but not on the cable characteristics. So consequently the cables are often oversized and a higher current could flow through the cables.
The new fusing concept is focused on the protection of cables. To reach this requirement, it is necessary to move the time-current characteristics of the fuses very closed to the time-current characteristics of the used cables. This allows to use the cables up to their thermal limit without damaging by overloads or short circuits. With this fusing concept it is possible to decrease cable material and weight and to reduce the costs.
