Direkte Gegenspieler von Insulin sind Glucagon und die Katecholamine. Glucagon ist verantwortlich für die Anpassung des Stoffwechsels an fehlende Nahrungszufuhr und wirkt überwiegend auf die Leber, wo es die Bereitstellung von Glucose durch Glycogenabbau und Gluconeogenese stimuliert.
