Abstract

In the previous chapter we investigated a special class of functions, C, the continuous functions. In this chapter we investigate a small subset of C, called differentiable functions or functions that possess derivatives. The concept of derivative, introduced by Newton and Leibniz, marked the beginning of modern calculus. Once familiar with the limit notation of Chapter 3, we are ready to define the concept of the derivative of a given function.
