Abstract
This book is the collective effort of many people working on the topic of self-organising systems since many years. It provides an introduction to the topic and reviews history and definitions, self-organising mechanisms, engineering techniques and applications. This chapter reviews the interest for this subject, highlights the main points to remember and briefly discusses some open research questions.
