Open Integration Environment for E-Learning Products and Services

  • Chapter
The Digital Economy — Anspruch und Wirklichkeit

Abstract

Today, the rate at which knowledge is being accumulated is exponentially increasing and knowledge represents 60% of the total added value of an enterprise (21KPMG 2001). For these reasons it is vitally important for society — transitioning from an industrial to an information society, and especially for industrial and academic institutions, to maintain a workforce with up-to-date knowledge and work practices. Traditional educational structures that promote one-time acquisition of uni-disciplinary knowledge are not designed to fulfill this need. Continuous lifelong learning is required.
