Abstract
A central task of the brain is finding homomorphies or correspondences between patterns.When we look at a scene, for example, our visual system has to find correspondence between the pattern that falls onto the retina and memories stored in the brain, enabling us to make sense of our environment. This ought to work even when the image we get to see of an object in a certain situation differs significantly from its representation in memory, which was created under very different conditions.
