Abstract
Part 1 of the book dealt with more or less general Baer ∗-rings, liberally seasoned with such axioms of a general nature as are needed to make the arguments work. From here on, most arguments entail qualitative distinctions between Baer ∗-rings; a particular argument will generally apply only to certain kinds of Baer ∗-rings (with or with-out extra axioms-usually with). {Some analogous qualitative considerations in group theory: commutativity, finiteness, solvability, decomposability, simplicity, etc.} Such qualitative distinctions are the basis of structure theory.
