Abstract

In this chapter we present some preliminary results concerning, mostly, the representation of a compact Riemann S as the orbit space of the hyperbolic plane H under the action of a surface Fuchsian group G. This is a consequence of the Uniformization Theorem for Riemann surfaces. The main point here is that if S = H/G is symmetric then its full automorphism group Aut(S) is a factor group ?/G where ? is a proper NEC group containing G as a normal subgroup.
