Abstract
Overlapping networks are the source of competition among airlines, as well as the key driver of synergies in potential alliance expansion or mergers. Network overlap also is increasingly subject to legal battles with antitrust authorities. As demonstrated in the recent merger, synergy, and ATI cases, network overlap has many facets. For that reason, this chapter reviews the various categories of network overlap and assesses the respective competitive and synergetic consequences. We weigh the options of sharing and splitting costs as well as revenues in airline alliances, along with the limitations of such benefit-sharing formulas.
