Abstract

Investigations using radionuclides are based on the ability of the thyroid gland to actively take up iodide ions and similar, negatively charged ions via the iodide pump (NIS). They also utilize the fact that iodine isotopes bind to the thyroglobulin molecule during hormone synthesis and are subsequently stored in the colloid.

Isotopes of iodine or technetium are used in the investigations (Table 4.1). Isotopes which emit γ radiation are used for diagnostic purposes. These have a long range and will reach outside the body. β emitters are used for treatment. These have a short range and are absorbed by the tissue.
