Abstract
The term goitre describes an enlargement of the thyroid gland. However, the concept of goitre does not in any way describe the underlying pathophysiological mechanism that causes the goitre. Neither does it describe the hormonal activity of the thyroid gland.
This chapter focuses solely on nontoxic benign goitre. For functional disturbances in the thyroid, refer to the chapters on hypothyroidism (Chaps. 10–13) and hyperthyroidism (Chaps. 18, 20, 21). For further information on palpable lumps in the thyroid and thyroid cancer, refer to Chaps. 29 and 30, respectively.
