Abstract
The thyroid gland consists of two separate physiological endocrine systems. The first system, which comprises most of the thyroid, is responsible for the production of the thyroid hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). The second endocrine cell system is responsible for production of the peptide hormone calcitonin. Knowledge of the embryonic development of the thyroid and its two physiological systems can facilitate the understanding of the final anatomical structure of the gland in adult humans.
