TELL(Technology-Enhanced Language Learning) and Less-Commonly Taught Languages: The Case of Modern Greek

Abstract

It is true that not all languages start from an even situation: some languages (which are considered “privileged”, “strong” or “widely spoken/used/ taught”) happen to have large numbers of speakers, others have few. In order to preserve, promote and spread Less Commonly Taught Languages (LCTL) it is important to avail of all potential promotion and dissemination mechanisms, one of which is Technology-Enhanced Language Learning (TELL). In this paper we shall first discuss LCTL in the TELL context and we shall then present a TELL application for Modern Greek, which aspires to contribute to the promotion and dissemination of a “small” language via the technology channel.
