Zusammenfassung

Bereits in der Antike sind Schienungstechniken zur Frakturbehandlung beschrieben worden (Hippokrates, Celsus, El Zahawari, Gooch). Meist resultierte daraus eine Verkürzung der betroffenen Extremität. Die kontinuierliche Traktion kam erstmals im 19. Jahrhundert zur Anwendung. Offene Frakturen waren bis vor 150 Jahren lebensgefährlich und bedeuteten in der Regel die Amputation. Noch gegen Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts verstarben 46 von 93 Patienten, die Billroth in Zürich behandelte, an den Folgen komplizierter Frakturen (Billroth 1881).
