Zusammenfassung
Noch die ICD-9 beschrieb bis 1990 das hyperkinetische Syndrom ausschließlich als Erkrankung des Kindesalters. In Angleichung an die DSM-Kriterien wird seit 1991 diese Einengung auf einen bestimmten Altersbereich jedoch nicht mehr getroffen. Forschungsergebnisse zeigen vielmehr, dass die Störung eine hohe Stabilität aufweist. So sind bei bis zu 30% der Betroffenen noch im frühen Erwachsenenalter Symptome der ADHS vorhanden (Schmidt & Petermann, 2008). Neuere Arbeiten (z. B. Tischler, Schmidt, Petermann & Koglin, 2010) gehen davon aus, dass mindestens 0,5–1% der jungen Erwachsenen ADHS-Symptome aufweisen. Im Erwachsenenalter bleiben die Grundzüge der Störung (Aufmerksamkeitsstörungen, Impulsivität und Hyperaktivität) erhalten, wenngleich sich zumeist Verschiebungen in den Ausprägungen ergeben. Zudem wird den Folgen der ADHS und den möglichen komorbiden Störungen wie etwa einer antisozialen Persönlichkeitsstörung oder Substanzmissbrauch im Erwachsenenalter oft mehr Beachtung geschenkt (Schmidt, Waldmann, Petermann & Brähler, 2010). Die Persistenz der Störung ist Gegenstand anhaltender Diskussionen und weist auf die Problematik einer einheitlichen diagnostischen Einordnung hin (Hampel et al. 2004) Aber auch im Kindes- und Jugendalter treten begleitend häufig zusätzliche emotionale Probleme, aggressiv-dissoziale Verhaltensweisen oder Lern- und Leistungsstörungen auf, die die Prognose verschlechtern (Petermann & Petermann, 2008).
