Zusammenfassung
Wir betrachten zwei verschachtelte Ellipsen γ und Γ, wählen einen Punkt X auf der äußeren Ellipse, legen an die innere eine Tangente und verlängern die Tangente, bis sie die äußere im Punkt Y schneidet. Wir wiederholen die Konstruktion von Y ausgehend usw. Wir erhalten ein Polygon, das in Γ eingeschrieben und γ umschrieben ist. Nehmen wir an, dieser Prozess ist periodisch: Der n-te Punkt fällt mit dem Ausgangspunkt zusammen. Nun beginnen wir an einem anderen Punkt, etwa X 1. Der Schließungssatz von Poncelet besagt, dass sich das Polygon wiederum nach n Schritten schließt (siehe Abbildung 29.1 auf der nächsten Seite)
