Abstract

In Chapter 1 the notion of stress in a bar has been introduced. We will now generalize the concept of stress to make it applicable to arbitrary structures. For this purpose the stress tensor is introduced. Subsequently we will discuss in detail the plane stress state that appears in thin sheets or plates under in-plane loading. This state is fully determined by stress components in two sections perpendicular to each other. We will see that the normal stress and the shear stress take on extreme values for specific directions of the section.
