Abstract

Renal cysts represent a wide spectrum of conditions ranging from simple cysts with little or no clinical significance to severe developmental renal abnormalities and progressive (polycystic) kidney disease or syndromes with multiple organ involvement. This chapter describes the clinical and pathological presentation, diagnostic strategies (including imaging and genetic testing), differential diagnoses, prognosis, and management. A precise diagnosis and (family) history is necessary for prognostic purposes, genetic counselling, and prenatal assessment and decision making. Therapeutic trials have begun for polycystic kidney diseases, but results are so far disappointing.
