Abstract
Lung transplantation is the established treatment for nonmalignant parenchymal and vascular lung diseases after all other treatment options have failed. The first lung transplantation was performed in 1963 by James Hardy. Since the late 1980s, the number of these procedures has risen constantly, and today more than 2,700 transplants are reported to the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation registry each year.
