Abstract
Boerhaave’s syndrome describes a spontaneous rupture of the distal esophagial wall due to a sudden increase in intraesophageal pressure caused by forceful retching and vomiting. It is associated with a high risk of severe complications and mortality. Fast diagnosis and early surgical treatment combined with radiological interventions when indicated offer the best chance for a satisfactory outcome. The approach and extent of surgery must be planned according to the location of the lesion, the time interval, and the region of expected infection.
